How to Display a Finished Paint-by-Numbers Canvas

Three framed paintings above a cream sofa in a sunlit living room.

The last numbered space is filled. Now comes a different kind of creative decision: where do you want to see your painting every day? The best way to display a finished paint-by-numbers canvas starts with what you painted on and how you want it to look in the room.

Start with the canvas you have

Look at the back and edges before shopping for a frame. If the canvas is attached to wooden bars, you have a stretched piece. If it’s still a flexible sheet, decide how it will be supported before choosing a frame. Give the paint the drying time recommended in your kit instructions before handling or framing it.

  • Loose canvas: Ask a framer whether there’s enough unpainted border to stretch it, or whether mounting it on a rigid backing makes more sense. Bring the piece or photos of its edges so the framer can see where the design ends.
  • Stretched canvas: Consider hanging it as it is if you like the sides, or look at a floating frame if you want to outline the piece while keeping its edges visible.
  • Rigid painting board: Check the frame’s opening and the depth available behind it. Ask for a fit that supports the board without pressing directly against the painted surface.

For another overview of loose canvas options, see Paint by Numbers UK’s finishing and display FAQ. Follow your own kit’s directions if its materials differ.

Measure the artwork before buying a frame

Write down the width and height of the painted area, the full size of the piece, and its depth if it’s stretched. Those numbers answer different questions: how much artwork you want visible, how large a backing you might need, and whether the canvas will fit inside a frame.

Look carefully at the edges. If a flower petal or another detail runs right up to the border, ask how much of the picture the frame would cover. You can test the look by placing strips of paper around the edges and shifting them until you like what remains visible. Keep the paper off any paint that isn’t ready to handle.

Try the arrangement before you hang anything

Trace the outside dimensions of the finished frame on paper and hold the outline against the wall. Check it from your usual seat as well as from the doorway. If you’re arranging several pieces, make a template for each one so you can change the spacing before placing the hardware.

For a single painting, try a spot where its colors already echo something in the room. For a group, repeat one element—a frame finish, a color, or a subject—to make the pieces feel related. A floral painting and a landscape can sit together if they share a color you want to bring out.

If you want to build a pair around a piece you’ve already finished, explore floral paint-by-numbers designs or landscape paint-by-numbers designs and compare the listed sizes before choosing.

Decide how permanent you want the display to be

A wall works well when you’ve found a spot you want to keep. Use hardware suited to the artwork’s weight and your wall type, and follow the hardware instructions. If you prefer to rotate pieces, try a stable display easel or a picture ledge that can safely hold the artwork. Check the depth and support before setting the piece down.

There’s no need to add a new coating just to make the piece feel finished. If you’re considering one, check your paint and coating instructions for compatibility and drying requirements first. You can also bring the piece to a framer and talk through the display conditions before committing.
